What is a passport?

It is a travel document issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to citizens for primarily the purpose of international travel. It certifies the identity and nationality of its holder.

What do you need when applying for a Ghanaian passport?

Buy a Passport Application Voucher online or from any branch of Ecobank, GCB Bank or Zenith Bank. It cost GHS 50 and GHS 100 for standard and expedited application respectively.

Required documents.

First time applicants.

Birth Certificate (Proof of Ghanaian citizenship)

Document to prove identify (Voter’s ID, National ID, Driver’s Licence)

Proof of Profession (An introductory letter from the applicant’s employer that is if the applicant is currently employed or a work ID card that bears applicant’s name, organisation’s name and position. A student ID if the applicant is currently in school.

Homemakers/housewives and applicants that are unemployed and those in the non-formal sector of employment like mechanics, hairdressers seamstresses, traders etc. do not need proof. Registered Business Owners and self-employed applicants must produce their business registration certificate as proof)

Biometric Passport Renewal.

Creating an account.

  1. Log on to https://passport.mfa.gov.gh/
  2. Click on “Register Here” to create new user account
  3. Fill in your name, telephone number, email, password and click “SIGN UP” to proceed.
  4. An SMS containing a verification code will be sent to you. Enter it in the space provided and click on verify.
  5. You’ve successfully created your account. Login with your details

Starting your passport application.

After a successful login, you’ll be redirected to your dashboard where you can start a new application.

To begin a new application, follow the steps below

  1. Click on “Start New Application
  2. If you have bought a voucher already enter the pin in the box provided and click verify.
  3. Fill in all details to complete application.
